Here's an introduction to the Chinese solar term "Frost's Descent"

23 / 10 / 2024

Frost's Descent, known as "Shuāng Jiàng" in Chinese, is one of the 24 traditional solar terms that mark the progression of the seasons in the Chinese lunisolar calendar. It typically falls around October 23rd or 24th, marking the transition from late autumn to the onset of winter. This period is characterized by a significant drop in temperature, leading to the first appearance of frost on the ground and on plants.

In agriculture, Frost's Descent is a critical time. Farmers in China are busy harvesting the last of their crops before the frost can damage them. It's also a time for preparing fields and storing produce for the colder months ahead. The arrival of frost signifies that it's time to take protective measures for sensitive crops and to begin the process of winterizing agricultural activities.

Culturally, Frost's Descent is associated with several customs and practices. In some regions, people consume specific foods believed to help the body adapt to the colder weather. For example, eating persimmons is a common practice, as they are thought to have warming properties. Additionally, there is a focus on nourishing the body with hearty, warming dishes and tonics to prepare for the coming winter.
